(Very few of) You Asked; We Answer

Asha asks:
do you find it difficult to have such long hair?
For the past couple of years I've subscribed to the "lots of hair" rather than having an actual hairstyle. I wash it every three days; the first day I braid it in two braids (I'm probably too old for it, but whatevahs). The second day my hair looks awesome, and the third day it's SAHM ponytail city.

I grew out my gray a couple years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. When I lived in NJ, I was asked on a fairly regular basis if my kids were "my grandbabies." It was distressing. On the West Coast, everyone seems to realize that those small children call me "Mama" are actually my kids.

can you ship baked ziti to africa?
If I can, I will.

have you ever thought about adopting another child?
If I could adopt the kids I know and love, I would. Also the parents I know and love. But we were lucky enough to be fruitful in our procreation, and maybe overwhelmingly so. I would adopt the person that asked me this question in a minute, and then I would make her babysit my kids so that I could go to the movies.

do you prefer living in a cold climate to a warm climate?
My ideal situation would be living in jeans and a tee shirt with a light sweater (Seattle). Late fall/early winter in LA seems to fit the bill. I also quite enjoyed the late hot summer in LA where it was 110 degrees with no humidity. (I just needed to always know where the shade was.) But ask me this question a year from now.

what is your dream car?
An early 1970s GTO. An early boyfriend shared the love of muscle cars. I also love pickup trucks from the 50s. There's a lot of classic cars here in LA.

where would you go on vacation if money/distance wasn't a consideration?
Honestly, I'm kind of lazy. I spent 6 months in Paris as an exchange student in high school and also visited Spain and Switzerland durng that time. I went back as an adult for a week in Paris as a tourist. My feeling about vacations are really that I need to spend 2+ weeks somewhere to get to know it or a week to just relax. So I'd love to spend a lot of time in Italy or Japan or a small amount of time in Cabo (with my Metcalf family) or on the Jersey shore (with my Brockway family).

My dear friend Paul from college asks:
Is the sky different?
It really is. It's bigger out here. It's overwhelming and it bears down on you, but at the same time it's brilliant and inspiring.

Is the smog thing true?
Two of my kids (the ones born in Jersey, natch) have cold-onset asthma. We subscribe to the LA Times and I check out the weather map every day (mostly to be all 80 degrees in November! Shut the front door!) but they always have the smog factor on the map. It hasn't been too bad yet.

Have you seen a sunset?

On Sunset Boulevard?
I have barely made it out of Burbank in the past four months. I ventured out once for Magic Mountain and once for the San Diego Zoo. I realize that there's a whole Hollyworld out there to see, but I think it will take a bunch of you nice folks to visit us for me to venture outside of Burbank.

Jed, one of Evan's oldest friends, asks:
What...is your favorite color?
Red. No, blue!
AAAAHHHHHHHhhhhhhh!
(actually, my favorite color is purple.)

  1. hi Amie! Here's my question - if you were back at Clinton School for the Winter Craft Fair, which is this Saturday, what craft would you bring to us this year? We are making the card garlands again this year because there were left overs from last year. We've got some great crafts, but I'll miss seeing you there this year!
