Spring Break, Day 2

Second day of spring break. We had plans to do something more substantial, and we just got haircuts and went to the park and ate ice cream. This will be a recurring theme.

Oh, and on Monday evening, I discovered Seafood City, a Filipino grocery right near the place where Arlo gets PT. I've been seriously missing the Asian Groceries in NJ, and I remembered that a woman told me about Seafood City when we were on line at the Asian stall at the farmer's market. (It's not really an Asian stall, but it does have gai lan, bok choi, pea shoots, and gorgeous, cheap hunks of ginger.) Seafood City is in a weird little mall that was on the brink of death, bookended by a Macys and a Target. Then Seafood City moved in and the whole mall turned Filipino. The food court, the clothing shops, the kiosks, everything. I've heard it called the Pinoy mall. This white girl from upstate NY felt very welcome there. They had many of my favorite Asian sauces, dim sum, and snacks there, although, sadly, the Poky delivery was late that week. Poor Goose was regulated to Hello Panda which, as we all know, is a sorry substitute. I'm going back Sunday for scallops and mussels -- the seafood looks gorgeous and cheap!

Tea stained spiced duck egg. They had a dozen quail eggs for $1.49. They are like ten bucks each at Whole Foods. Also, check out that manicure!

Dinner that night: Korean rice bowl, with rice from the rice cooker and shumai steamed in the basket. Evan is happy to not have to scrub out my bamboo steamers. This is a great recipe, by the way. Even the kids like it. I use a handful of frozen spinach instead of fresh, whatever steak I have in the freezer, and the preshredded carrots from Trader Joes, which makes this a very quick meal (and then you always have shredded carrots for salad!)

Haircuts!

Arlo has been feeling a little blue lately. He's always wanted a mohawk, so I plopped him down in the barber chair and told the lady to go for it. I described a modified 'hawk that would be low on the sides, have short hair on the sides, and could pass as a regular hairstyle.

And then I went and art-directed Oscar's haircut, and tried to keep The Goose from setting anything on fire. And by the time I made it back to Arlo, half of his head looked like this:

The barber said, well, I shaved it low, and then I asked him if he wanted it to be higher and he said yes!

He looks like a My Little Pony. He's all curly mane, ears and ears. It's pretty adorable, and hey, it's just hair, right?

And when he wears a cap he looks like a Thompson Twin.

Oscar got a pretty cute haircut too.
