Summer, Part 4: Seattle!

Summer trip #2: off to Seattle!

The walk to the grandparents' house(boat) is one of my favorite of all time.

Arlo was a crabpot after the short flight. Luckily there was a Mama Duck and her eleven fluffy tweenaged ducklings. He begged Gretta for bread and ended up tossing scraps of stale tortillas to a very happy duck family.

Cousins Hayden (10) and Kendall (14) were there as well! It was the first year all three of our kids were confidant enough to go into Lake Union. (It is deep and cold!)

Evan and The Goose out on the famous bench, as Kendall looks cute on the dock.

The Goose in the drink.

Cousin leap off the deck. (Arlo decided not to join them.)

It's the Fourth of July! My in-laws have had a fireworks viewing party for decades now. They do have the best possible view of the best fireworks, and they throw a great party. My first visit with them was for the 4th (Evan and I stayed on a tugboat tied up to the dock!) and it's a highlight of our year.

The Goose and I decided to do a craft for all the kids that attended. After 20-ish years, they have attracted lots of couples who tended to have lots of kids. We made pinwheels with the boys and ribboned hair ties with the girls.

One of Gretta's best friends has a daughter that we were lucky to (kinda) see grow up and get married and then boy howdy, she had a baby. And I got to hold that baby and my hormones kicked in and I was ready for #4. But then my sweet husband gave me the look and I passed the baby back to her mama. But I made squishy baby faces at her all night.

Friends! And cousins! And step-families! We've been visiting here for a long time, and are so happy to have many friends in Seattle. We used to get completely smashed at this party. Now we get merely tipsy and chase after our kids.

South Orange friends! Here's the Brockway+Metcalfs and Bushfields, our neighbors and dear friends from NJ that moved to Seattle and we are lucky enough to see once a year.

Fireworks!

The next day I took my girlies out for coffee and a cookie.

Kendall decided that the Goose needed more hair styling. She introduced her to a hair iron.

Kendall rented a paddleboard down the dock.

Her brother swam out to irritate her. She thwacked him with a paddle.

Everyone likes to hang out on the old train track.

Best thing about the walk to Fremont: seeing the drawbridge go up and down.

We visited our favorite sushi place: Blue C, home of cheap udon and conveyor belt maki.

And of course, Archie McPhee's.

Mostly I just like to hang out at the houseboat.

It's weird living on a tourist attraction.
House rule #1: Always wave to the tour boats.

But it's always fun tossing your kid off the front deck.

And cuddling them in a towel afterwards.

Arlo went down the "street" to chase off a huge gang of Canadian Geese.

House rule #2: Feed the ducks, NOT the geese.

(somewhere in here The Goose's friend Stella came to visit -- those pictures next time!)

We love these guys!

And that last long walk off the dock. My in-laws place is so magical.

Even the trip home is pretty awe-inspiring!
